The King James Version went through four revisions (1629 Cam, 1638 Cam, [& 1683 per Catalogue of Engl Bib Translations], 1760/1762 Cam, and 1769 Ox). For a period, Cambridge continued to issue Bibles using the Parris (1760/62/63 Cambridge) text, but the market demand for absolute standardization was now such that they eventually adapted Blayney’s (1769 Oxford) work, but omitted some of the idiosyncratic Oxford spellings. By the mid-19th century, almost all printings of the Authorized Version (i.e. the ones allowed for use in English state churches) were derived from the 1769 Oxford text. By the early twentieth century, editing had been completed in Cambridge’s text, with at least 6 new changes since 1769, and the reversing of at least 30 of the standard Oxford readings. The distinct Cambridge text was printed in the millions, and after the Second World War “the unchanging steadiness of the KJB was a huge asset.” The Cambridge edition is preferred by scholars. “where there was any difference in words, or in the omission or addition of words, among these, he followed that which appeared to be most agreeable to the Hebrew of Arias Montanus, and to the Greek of Arias Montanus and Leusden, and always adopted some one of the above-mentioned English copies as his authority, except in the mode of spelling, in which he has generally followed Johnson.” The text itself derives ultimately from contemporary bibles of the cambridge university press probably by way of the 1816 collins quarto and elihu whites 1820 quarto published by D D smith, but additionally with an to a, etc.
